Mesothelioma or Asbestos Question?

Categories of Mesothelioma Surgeries

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium, which is the lining surrounding many important internal organs. Mesothelioma is one of the deadliest forms of cancer, which is largely due to the fact that mesothelioma takes years, and sometimes even decades, to begin showing symptoms. Sadly, by the time a person has identifiable signs of the disease, it is usually too late to cure it.

The only known cause of mesothelioma is exposure to broken asbestos fibers. Asbestos is a fibrous mineral that becomes lodged in the lungs when its fibers are inhaled. Asbestos was used in many industries for years but was eventually banned after its health risks became widely known. It is responsible for a number of serious medical conditions, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and the incredibly deadly mesothelioma. Types of Surgeries

If you have mesothelioma, there are three types of surgeries doctors can perform depending on the progression of your disease, and they range in invasiveness and purpose. A diagnostic surgery is the most basic surgical procedure a doctor can perform. This type of surgery allows a doctor to better understand a patient’s condition and evaluate the progression of his or her disease.

A palliative surgery’s mission is to alleviate some of a patient’s symptoms in order to improve his or her quality of life. If a patient is experiencing a lot of pain, but is not quite healthy enough to withstand a more invasive surgery, palliative surgery is a good option. Potentially curative surgeries aim to remove the cancer from the patient entirely. While there is no outright cure for mesothelioma, these kinds of surgeries can help lessen symptoms and slow the spread of the disease.
