Symptoms of Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is the most common type of cancer caused by asbestos exposure and inhalation. If you have had exposure to asbestos due to the nature of your work or from a house or building, you may be concerned about your risk from asbestos related illness such as mesothelioma. In order to ascertain the likelihood that you are suffering from mesothelioma you should be on the lookout for certain symptoms. The most common symptoms of this cancer are:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pains
- Weight loss
- Loss of energy
- Dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing)
- Abdominal pain
If You are Experiencing Symptoms
If you or someone you love has been exposed to asbestos and is also experiencing any of these symptoms, you should seek medical help immediately. The treatability of this cancer is largely based on how early it is detected. Do not wait to have tests for mesothelioma until the symptoms have become severe. By this point your prognosis could be grim or your treatment options fewer and much more invasive and life altering.
When you go to your doctor let him or her know about your symptoms as well as your history with asbestos exposure. Do not leave out any details, as this cancer is sometimes quite difficult to diagnose. Once your doctor has checked your vitals and preformed certain tests and believes that mesothelioma might be a possibility, he or she will likely perform a tissue biopsy. The biopsy results will help you and your doctor determine whether or not you have mesothelioma.
