American shipyard workers who worked during WWII and the Korean War had an almost certain exposure to asbestos.

The material was frequently used for shipbuilding before there was awareness of the health risk. No safety measures were wore because of the lack of knowledge.

Crew members were also exposed to asbestos due to the dust and fibers in the air. Exposure to asbestos can lead to many illnesses such as mesothelioma.
