Nearly half-dozen Oak Ridge cleanup workers have filed a lawsuit in Roane County Circuit Court after claiming that they were exposed to asbestos without protective gear, along with other hazardous material, nearly a decade ago.

The lawsuit was filed last weekend and is seeking compensation from a number of government contractors who were involved in a cleanup project in 2000 and 2001 at the Department of Energy’s K-25 plant.

Six plaintiffs filed the lawsuit after working at R&R Electric Corp. as independent contractors. The plaintiffs claim in the lawsuit that they were told that the condensers that they were using did not contain asbestos particles and that they were denied protective gear when they asked for it.

They are now claiming that they were exposed to asbestos among other toxic materials while working. Lawyers representing the men have stated that they have experienced medical problems as a result of being exposed at the Oak Ridge Cleanup.

An appeals court ruled this week that asbestos victims can file lawsuits against the maker of brake shoe grinding machines after it was determined that asbestos fibers were released from the lining of the brakes.

The lawsuits were filed by a former mechanic and three other families who lost their loved one to an asbestos-related disease. The lawsuits state that the machine, made by Hennessy Industries, exposed the workers to asbestos.

The mechanic is suffering from asbestosis and the three other victims passed away in 2007 and 2008. This ruling overturned a decision made in June 2010 that stated that Hennessy Industries did not use asbestos in the machine and that they were not responsible for toxic substances that may have come from other company’s products.

The decision was reversed because it was discovered that the purpose of the machines was to grind down the lining of brakes, which would release asbestos as a result.

The fire house that is home to Ladder 15 and Medic Unit 47 will be closed in order to fix repairs, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department.

The fire department stated that the closure is due to an investigation to a possible asbestos presence on the encasing of some of the older pipes. Asbestos is a toxic material that is known to cause lung cancer, such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.

Asbestos is usually not a threat until it is disturbed. Once it becomes airborne, it can lodge into the lung and metastasize. All of the firefighters and medic members will be transferred to nearby firehouses while their home station is closed. Once all repairs are done, the firehouse will be reopened.

A Marine veteran, John Johnson, who developed malignant mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos on the job, filed a lawsuit against multiple companies, but passed away before he was ever able to make it to court.

Johnson’s family is now claiming that the defense attorneys stalled so that Johnson would die before he could ever receive any money for his pain. In California, asbestos defendants can have up to 20 hours of plaintiff depositions and even though Johnson’s doctors stated that 12 hours of deposition time would be more than Johnson could handle, he had to give a total of 25 hours total from the companies he sued.

His family stated that he put off going to court in order to make all of the deposition hearings. This included the last deposition, on Jan. 23 when he answered questions from dozens of attorneys. Forty minutes after this deposition, Johnson collapsed and he was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital, where he died the next day.

Cases like this one have some concerned that legal technicalities are preventing asbestos victims from getting the compensation they deserve. Asbestos law is not a factor of determining whether or not asbestos causes mesothelioma, but more then letting the defendant blame someone else for these claims. Officials are now hoping for a better solution to help asbestos victims.

Asbestos removal is set to begin at the Northampton County Courthouse after the county found asbestos at this location and 11 other areas throughout the county.

The Environmental Protection Agency was notified of the asbestos at the Northampton County Courthouse law library and the removal process began this week.

Officials have stated that workers will be removing asbestos and that this will take between four and six weeks because it will have to be removed from all of the material inside of the library.

This has been the second time that asbestos has been removed from this area of the courthouse, but allegedly courthouse officials do not know how the carcinogenic ended up back in the library. Other buildings in the county have already undergone asbestos removal and are reopening at this time.

A street in downtown St. Louis will be closed all week after a pipe burst last week and the rupture blew a hole in the asphalt that released asbestos insulation fibers into the air.

One area of 11th Street has already opened and after test results on contamination levels are returned, Lucas Avenue will be reopened after that. Officials with the company who manages the pipe have stated that fixing it may take anywhere from a week to 10 days.

Cleaning the area has not been an easy process. Tests that were done on Monday still showed signs of asbestos contamination. The Easter holiday also slowed down the process as crews now work to clean streets, balconies, buildings, and roofs. It is still unknown at this time what caused the pipe to rupture.

New research now shows that asbestos exposure may be linked to the development of heart disease and stroke.

It has been known for some time that asbestos exposure, mainly at the workplace, is tied to the development of lung disease and cancers such as mesothelioma, but heart disease is a new addition to the dangers of the toxic material.

In the latest study, scientists looked into the cause of death of 100,000 workers that were exposed to asbestos and it was found that the a significantly higher number of them died of a cardiovascular disease. It was also found that this may affect woman more than men.

Asbestos is a known carcinogen that can cause serious health problems. If this has happened to you or a loved one, you need representation on your side at this time. Contact us for any questions that you may have or visit out website at www.mesothelioma-asbestoshelp.org.

New legislature is currently being proposed to lawmakers and if passed, it would allow the Food and Drug Administration to quickly pass new and innovative treatment for Mesothelioma sufferers.

The bill is called the Faster Access to Specialized Treatment and it will basically allow patients that do no have time to wait for access to get medical options quickly.

The current approval rate for new drugs takes a very long time and for people who suffer from mesothelioma, they do not have much time. If a scientist discovers a new medicine that may be able to shrink a tumor, the FDA will be able to approve the bill quickly and make it more possible for mesothelioma patients to seek new treatment.

The Department of Energy has stated that safeguards have been put into place in order to prevent asbestos from being inhaled in the lungs by workers in the removal process.

An agreement was recently signed after the inspector general of the Environmental Protection Agency stated that the removal process at a Hanford building and elsewhere may be threatening the health and safety of the workers involved.

Workers used to removed asbestos by hand before heavy equipment, such as an excavator began to be used. The asbestos was mainly in the panels and bolted into the walls.

It is now thought that a mechanical demolition may cause the siding to crumble, thus making the asbestos particles very fine. Once they are fine and disturbed, they can be breathed into the lung. If asbestos is breathed into the lung, it may cause serious lung conditions such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.
