Mesothelioma or Asbestos Question?

Library Closed for Asbestos Abatement

The Prendergast Library in Jamestown, New York will be closed to the public for as long as three months because of asbestos abatement. New light fixtures will be installed, the electrical system will be replaced and the flooring will be redone. In order for this to happen, asbestos must first be removed from the buildings.

Stohl Environmental has been hired to remove asbestos from the ceiling and floor. The entire project is expected to cost about $800,000 including asbestos abatement and renovations. The building will be closed for public safety so that there is no asbestos exposure.

City Council Approves Asbestos Abatement

In Trenton, New Jersey, the City Council has approved ordinance for asbestos removal in a unanimous decision. The city will hire Forefront Environmental Services for the asbestos asbatement aspect of a demolition project.

In the first round of abatement, 13 properties will be taken care of. Once the abatement is completed, the demolition project will be open to bids. Taking care of the asbestos abatement first will allow the buildings to be destroyed safely without releasing a dangerous substance into the air.

Illinois Elementary School Removes Asbestos

Spring Grove Elementary School in Illinois has had all of its asbestos removed because of a renovation project. The school was replacing a boiler when workers found asbestos around the piping. However, this was expected, and a company was hired to remove the asbestos so that the old boiler could be safely removed and the new one installed.

Holian Industries was given the asbestos removal contract for $16,000. According to school officials, the school has been inspected by ESI and has been declared asbestos free. There was no asbestos in the building when classes began on August 19 although there were some barricades and warning signs.

New Asbestos Cancer Test

Researchers at Oxford University claim that they have made a better test for asbestos related cancer. The test looks at levels of a protein that is associated with cancer in the fluid of the lungs.

The current method of diagnosis is called pleural fluid cytology. This looks at the fluid in the lungs to determine whether or not cancer cells are present. However, it is not very sensitive and can miss the cells fairly often.

Estrogen Vs Mesothelioma

Both sexes are affected by mesothelioma, but researchers have noticed that women tend to survive longer and have less aggressive tumors. A group of Italian researchers believed that this might have something to do with estrogen. Their studies showed that this was true.

According to the research, patients with more estrogen receptor beta had less cancer cell growth. They also found that as estrogen was introduced to mesothelioma cancer cells, those cells stopped growing or slowed growth.

More research is needed before scientists can determine whether or not estrogen can be used as a cancer treatment.

Ball Fields Made from Former Asbestos Site

Where an asbestos plant once stood, ball fields are now being put in. The township of Berkeley Heights, New Jersey and its respective county purchased the 17 acre site back in 2004. Five years later, the site has been cleaned up and is ready for the ball fields to be constructed.

42,000 tons of soil had been contaminated by asbestos and petroleum leaks and had to be removed from the site. The initial projected cost was $1 million, but the task came out to $6.5 million. Now the county has granted a $3.85 million contract to a developer to put ball fields, a concession stand, restrooms and parking into its 13 acres of land.

The other four acres of land belong to Berkeley Heights and still do not have plans for renovation.

Fire Raises Asbestos Concerns

In Torrington, Connecticut, a factory fire has led to some concern about the spread of asbestos. The fire burned at the Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation factory where a large amount of asbestos was stored.

The blaze became so large that area residents needed to be evacuated and vinyl siding on nearby houses melted. Because of this, residents are worried that the asbestos could have been released into the air. However, the state Department of Environmental Protection says there is little danger.

Diagnostic Tests Improved in Conjuction

Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston have found that using two genetic tests in conjunction with one another can greatly increase the sensitivity of mesothelioma diagnostic tests.

The two tests, karyotyping and fluorescence in situ hybridiztion (FISH), used along with cytology nearly doubled the sensitivity of the tests on their own. The researchers examined 48 patients thought to have mesothelioma and had a 60% success rate.

Combination Scan Works Better

Researchers have found that a combination computerized tomography-positron emission tomography (CT-PET) scan is more beneficial to mesothelioma patients than a normal CT or MRI scan.

In an evaluation of the scan results of 35 patients, researchers found that CT scans showed 4 of them in advanced stage mesothelioma. However, the CT-PET scan showed 16 of those same patients in advanced stages.

This information is useful for patients who are considering surgery as it can help with benefit analysis. The surgery is very dangerous and most patients in advanced stages do not benefit from it.
