An Atlanta-based mold testing lab is warning people returning to their damaged homes after the recent floods to be especially careful. When flooding destroys houses and businesses, it can expose old fittings and construction materials that contain asbestos, such as pipes, ducts, roofing, tiles, and cement sheet.
Asbestos is used much less commonly than it was in the past, and the few products that do still contain the fiber must be clearly labled as such. However, prior to legislation in the 1970s, carcinogenic asbestos was used in all sorts of products around the house, and flooding could have exposed them.
