The Darnall Hall dorm at Georgetown University will be undergoing asbestos removal before classes begin this fall.
The school newspaper is reporting that asbestos tiles were underneath the old carpet and that an experienced contractor will be using the proper asbestos removal procedures during the renovation project.
A university spokesman has said that the building was built prior to the 1980’s when asbestos was still used in multiple construction projects.
An environmental firm and an industrial hygiene company have both been hired to ensure that the asbestos is removed in a correct and safe way. Asbestos is the primary cause of mesothelioma when it is disturbed because it lodges into the lung.
