Mesothelioma or Asbestos Question?

Types of Mesothelioma

In the 1940s, doctors and researchers at a hospital in South Africa discovered a lung disorder that was not lung cancer exactly, yet it was not tuberculosis either. After several years of research, they finally presented their findings to the medical world: they had found a new type of cancer known as mesothelioma.

Interestingly, the doctors learned that asbestos exposure was the primary cause of the mesothelioma cases that they saw. Now, after many more studies as well as more advanced diagnostic tools, we know that mesothelioma can attack several different parts of the body.

The Three Main Forms of Mesothelioma

In general, mesothelioma is a cancer that attacks the various internal linings of the body. These linings are responsible for secreting lubricating fluids that protect your organs from friction against each other and the inner walls of the body.

These linings appear in several different places throughout the body, all of which can be attacked by this deadly cancer. Thus, mesothelioma has been divided into three different forms, based on the affected area:

  • Pleural – cancer in the lining of the lungs
  • Peritoneal – cancer in the lining of the abdominal cavity
  • Pericardial – cancer in the lining of the heart

Additionally, there is a very rare type of mesothelioma that affects the tunica vaginalis testis, which is the lining of the testes.
