In Iron Range, Minnesota, 58 residents have died from mesothelioma. Until recently, there has been some controversy over how the state has handled these deaths. The state requested a $4.9 million study to be conducted by the University of Minnesota.

The study will look for a relationship between exposure to taconite dust and the development of mesothelioma. The study will examine 1,200 former taconite workers and 800 spouses of those workers.
