147 companies sued in asbestos suit

Eighteen people in West Virgina are suing 147 different companies claiming that they are responsible for their asbestos-related health problems.

The eighteen plaintiffs are claiming that the defendants failed to warn them of the asbestos-laden products when they should have known the health issues associated with the material and that they should have probably warned the plaintiffs.

A few of the defendants include: 20th Century Glove Corporation of Texas, Bayer Corporation, General Electric Corporation, the Goodyear tire and rubber company, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and many more.

Elementary school undergoes major renovations, asbestos abatement

Redding Elementary School in Connecticut has undergone renovations inside and out in order to prepare for new school year, one of the renovations that was done was the removal of asbestos.

The flooring of the school contained asbestos in the glue holding in the tiles of the floor. Asbestos abatement had to be done is the cafeteria, computer lab, main hallways, main office, exercise room, and staff lounge.

Asbestos was also discovered in the ramps that lead to the classrooms. All of the removal projects will be finished before the first day of school inĀ  order to ensure that students are not around when the toxic asbestos material is airborne. Contractor fined over $33K for asbestos violations

An environmental remediation company has been fined $33,550 by state regulators after the removal of asbestos from a Naval Weapons Station.

According to officials, LVI Environmental Services of North Carolina, the asbestos removal company did no follow the proper removal procedures when handling the toxic material when materials were removed from some of the housing units in the station.

A spokesperson from the company has not yet responded. When disposed of improperly, the asbestos fibers may become airborne and then they can be very dangerous. The fibers can lodge in a person’s lungs and remain dormant for years until causing lung cancer, asbestosis or mesothelioma.

Homeowners in Oregon sue over possible asbestos contamination

Homeowners at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon have filed a lawsuit against the federal government and former owners of the place for possible asbestos contamination.

The owners association at Sunriver filed a complaint last month that asbestos was found after one of the buildings was demolished. The siding, floor tiles, ceilings and walls were all contaminated with asbestos and are now buried underneath the ground. The Department of Environmental Quality has stepped in to help the company remove over 1,500 pounds of toxic material.

An additional $3 million is expected to be spent to remove all of the material. Asbestos is not dangerous unless it is disturbed. Once disturbed it becomes airborne and can lodge in the lung later causing lung cancer and other asbestos-related diseases.

Georgetown University undergoes asbsestos removal

The Darnall Hall dorm at Georgetown University will be undergoing asbestos removal before classes begin this fall.

The school newspaper is reporting that asbestos tiles were underneath the old carpet and that an experienced contractor will be using the proper asbestos removal procedures during the renovation project.

A university spokesman has said that the building was built prior to the 1980’s when asbestos was still used in multiple construction projects.

An environmental firm and an industrial hygiene company have both been hired to ensure that the asbestos is removed in a correct and safe way. Asbestos is the primary cause of mesothelioma when it is disturbed because it lodges into the lung.
