School district awarded $200,000 in asbestos removal plan

The Ohio Department of Development has awarded the Chillicothe City Schools a $200,000 grant for a long awaited asbestos removal project at a middle school.

Asbestos is a building material that was used commonly in older buildings for its durability, strength and fireproof qualities, but it was banned in the United States in the 1980s because they have been linked to fatal diseases such as asbestosis and mesothelioma.

Man sentenced after posing as asbestos inspector

A 46-year-old man was sentenced after he was caught posing as an asbestos inspector in Denver. The man was ordered to 40 days in jail and ordered to pay $5,000 forging lab results and misleading state officials.

The man was hired by a demolition company to test mobile homes for asbestos and he told the company that he was a certified asbestos inspector. Instead of taking a bulk sample, the man incorrectly took samples from the air and forged the lab results that stated that the the homes were clear.

State inspectors that got a tip that the homes did include asbestos and it was later discovered that the mobile home park had more than 160 square feet of asbestos-containing material. The incident was considered an “emergency situation.”

Asbestos removal from county building in Fort Wayne will cost millions

Asbestos was found at a Fort Wayne County building and it could cost nearly $1 million to remove all the toxic material from the building.

Asbestos is used in many buildings that were constructed before the 1980s and then it was found that by inhaling asbestos particles, many diseases could result from it. Diseases such as mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer,  and asbestosis.

The County Council has agreed to the building into the county and city police headquarters. Before anymore renovations are done, the asbestos abatement must be completed.
