New treatment tried on mesothelioma patient

Doctors at the Mayo Clinic recently tried a new treatment involving cryotherapy on a patient who been diagnosed with mesothelioma. According to reports, 68-year-old Mary Kuntz was the first patient to undergo the new cryotherapy treatment.

During the procedure, doctors first froze the part of the lung where the tumor is located by applying liquefied nitrogen. Two weeks later, surgeons extracted the tumor. At the moment, doctors are still waiting to see how the new method of treatment will impact the patient’s recovery. Medical professionals believe the cryotherapy may help to preserve the lungs of mesothelioma patients, in addition to being less intensive than traditional treatments. Kuntz is¬†hopeful that her choice to undergo the experimental treatment will improve the chances for mesothelioma patients.
