4 Massachusetts companies facing $129K fine for improper asbestos handling

Four companies in Worcester are expected to settle a $129,000 fine for improper asbestos handling during demolition projects, an article of stated on April 1.

According to reports, Patriots Environmental failed to comply with safety precautions and proper procedures for asbestos handling while conducting demolition projects. The company allegedly was negligent while removing materials from a house that contained asbestos. The lawsuit, originally filed by the Attorney General’s Office in 2014, was later amended after it became apparent that the owner of Patriots Environmental also owns three other companies, one of which failed to settle a $54,000 fine after being assessed by environmental authorities. The companies were given until November 2018 to settle the fine.

Retired carpenter’s death from mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure

A Weston man who worked as a carpenter in his younger years and recently died of a rare cancer was recently found to have developed the diseased after being exposed to asbestos in the workplace for decades.

According to the findings released recently by the Flax Bourton Coroner’s Court, Kenneth Wilton died of mesothelioma due to extensive exposure to asbestos. The 81-year-old Wilton died early in the morning on November 3 at Weston Hospicecare months after he was diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Wilton said in a statement before his death that he had been working with his bare hands while utilizing tools to manipulate asbestos-laden panels.
