Mesothelioma or Asbestos Question?

Lufkin couple names 37 defendants in lawsuit

A couple from Lufkin, Texas has named 37 companies in an asbestos lawsuit claiming that the companies caused him to develop lung cancer.

In December 2010, the man was diagnosed with mesothelioma and the complaint was filed in March 22. He claims to have smoked a pipe from 1954 to 1962 and cigars from 1968 to 1995.

The plaintiffs claim that the defendants were negligent by having contaminated buildings, intentional tort, strict liability, and breach of implied and expressed warranty. A few of the defendants include 3M Company Inc., Ford Motor Company, and General Electric Company.

Canadian Mesothelioma Cases Skyrocket

According to a new report published by the Canadian Press, the number of cases of mesothelioma in Canada has exploded by 67% over the past 15 years. Mesothelioma is a virulent type of cancer linked with exposure to asbestos, used in various construction capacities for decades. While the country now has laws against using the fiber in new construction projects, asbestos is still present in older buildings.

Additionally, Canada continues to be one of the major exporters of asbestos, sending about 190,000 tons to mostly poor, developing countries every year. The mining of chrysotile asbestos continues to be a big industry in Montreal.
