Two jails in Kansas to be worked on for asbestos removal

Two correctional facilities in Kansas will be undergoing asbestos removal in multiple buildings after the toxic material was found during a recent audit.

The $170,000 asbestos assessment was done on pipe insulation, ceiling material and multiple other items that were likely to contain asbestos. Now, another $75,000 has been allotted to remove the asbestos from the pipe wrapping and ceiling tiles.

The Kansas Department of Corrections has ordered the removal, but has said that some places that may have asbestos are not needed for immediate removal. Some think that a plan should be made to rid all correctional facilities of asbestos.

Asbestos found at Fordham University

Asbestos has been found at Fordham University, according to the university’s vice president of facilities.

The toxic material was found during a recent renovation project, but it was not completely unexpected because buildings built during the time period that these were, used asbestos frequently. The vice president exclaimed that they are using an “extensive containment system” and that the process will not pose a health risk to students.

Two buildings on campus had asbestos in them and it has been removed from both of them. The asbestos removal was done during the summer and while there were students on campus, officials have said that they have no risk of being exposed. The toxic material is the primary cause of the development of mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer.

Asbestos abatement to be done to former Allen-Morrison Corp. building

More than a decade ago, a property formerly owned by Allen-Morrison Corp., closed their doors, but hazardous chemicals were left behind in the building.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Virginia’s state protection agency have been working to clean up the site because the site is being considered to be turned into a park.

Crews must begin by removing trash and debris from the area before the asbestos removal can begin. The building can not be demolished until after the asbestos has been removed because when asbestos is disturbed it can then lodge into a person’s lung and cause diseases such as mesothelioma.
